Unlike receptor-mediated peptides, bioregulators operate through a gene-regulatory mechanism. Their short amino acid sequences penetrate the cell nucleus and interact with specific DNA regions, activating dormant genes responsible for protein synthesis in the target organ. This epigenetic approach means bioregulators work to restore the tissue's own regenerative capacity rather than introducing external signals.
Each bioregulator peptide has complementary affinity for specific promoter regions of DNA. When bound, they facilitate chromatin decondensation and enable transcription of proteins essential for the target organ's normal function.
Khavinson's research demonstrated that each bioregulator selectively accumulates in its target tissue. Cardiogen concentrates in cardiac tissue, Cortagen in cortical neurons, and Thymogen in the thymus - with minimal off-target activity.
