Livagen is unique among bioregulators in having direct evidence of chromatin decondensation activity: studies using fluorescence microscopy and micrococcal nuclease digestion assays have demonstrated that Livagen physically opens compacted heterochromatin regions in hepatocyte nuclei, making previously silenced gene promoters accessible to transcription factors.
