Human Cathelicidin: Innate Immune Defense Peptide

LL-37 is the only cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide produced in humans. It is derived from the 18-kDa precursor protein hCAP-18, which is cleaved by proteinase 3 in neutrophil granules to release the active 37-amino acid C-terminal peptide beginning with two leucine residues (hence LL-37). It is expressed by neutrophils, macrophages, epithelial cells of the skin, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal mucosa. LL-37 represents a critical bridge between innate and adaptive immunity, functioning as both a direct antimicrobial agent and an immune signaling molecule.
